What Is a Micro-School?

Small, intentional learning communities designed around the needs of the students they serve.

The Micro-School Model

Education Designed Around Your Child

Microschools are small multi-family learning environments that are designed and operated around the educational needs of the particular students they serve. Microschools vary greatly when it comes to their teaching and learning models, organizational structures, and missions — and that flexibility is exactly what makes them powerful.

How Small Is a Micro-School?

Microschools can thrive with as few as five learners. Multi-age classrooms are common, and traditional grade levels usually carry less significance. Mastery-based models are often popular as alternatives to advancement based on seat time. At SynergyEd, we keep our community intentionally small — no more than 10 students — so every child is truly known.

Many Ways to Learn

Microschools are flexible by design — here are some of the models they use.

Homeschool-Aligned

Some microschools operate under homeschool frameworks, giving families maximum flexibility while still providing structured, teacher-led instruction.

Hybrid Microschooling

Increasingly popular — students attend fewer than five days per week and combine microschool learning with private classes, tutors, or other experiences.

Learn Everywhere

Microschools draw from outdoor experiential learning, Montessori approaches, social-emotional growth designs, community schools, and countless other learning paths.

Flexible Facilities

Storefronts, adapted living rooms, commercial space, houses of worship — microschool leaders are innovative about where learning happens.

The SynergyEd Difference

Every Child Is Known

With small groups, teachers truly know each student — their strengths, struggles, interests, and learning style.

Designed for Your Family

Microschools are built around the students they serve — not the other way around. Families have real input into how learning happens.

Mastery Over Seat Time

Students advance when they've truly mastered a concept — not just because the calendar says it's time to move on.

Learn Everywhere

From outdoor experiences to community partnerships, learning isn't confined to four walls. The world is the classroom.
